Thyroid cancer

Cancer July 19th, 2010

Thyroid cancer is a malignancy of the thyroid that has four types, papillary, follicular, anaplastic, or Medullary.

Cancer rarely causes enlargement of the gland, more often causes a small growth (nodule) in the gland.
Most are benign thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer is usually curable.

Thyroid cancer often limits the ability to absorb iodine and limiting the ability to produce thyroid hormone, but sometimes cancer produce enough thyroid hormone resulting in hyperthyroidism.

Thyroid nodules tend to be malignant if it:

1. Only found one.
2. Skening thyroid nodules show that does not work.
3. Nodulnya solid and its content is not fluid (cystic).
4. Nodulnya hard.
5. Rapid growth.

Papillary cancer

60-70% of thyroid cancers are papillary cancer.
2-3 times more common in women.

Papillary cancer is more common among young people, but at an advanced age of this cancer grow and spread faster.
High risk for papillary cancer found in people who had undergone radiation therapy in the neck.

This cancer is treated with surgery, which sometimes involve the appointment of the surrounding lymph nodes.
Nodules with a diameter smaller than 1.9 cm was appointed along with the thyroid gland in the vicinity, although some experts recommend to raise the entire thyroid gland.
Surgery is almost always able to cure this cancer.

Given thyroid hormone in doses sufficient to suppress TSH release and help prevent relapse.

If nodulnya larger, then the appointment is usually done most or all of the thyroid gland and radioactive iodine is often given, with the hope that the remaining thyroid tissue or cancer that has spread will absorb it and destroyed.
Another dose of radioactive iodine may be necessary to ensure that the entire cancer has been destroyed.
Papillary cancer is almost always curable.

Follicular cancer

15% of thyroid cancers are follicular cancers.
Follicular cancer is also more common in women.

Follicular cancer tends to spread through the bloodstream, spreading cancer cells into various organs of the body.

Treatment for this cancer is removal of as much as possible of the thyroid gland and radioactive iodine to destroy tissue or remaining cancer cells.

Anaplastic cancer

Less than 10% of thyroid cancer is anaplastic cancer.
This cancer most often found in older women pda.

Anaplastic cancer grow very rapidly and usually causes a large lump in the neck.
Approximately 80% of patients die within one year.

Provision of radioactive iodine is not useful because the cancer does not absorb radioactive iodine.
Provision of anti-cancer drugs and radiation therapy before and after surgery gives satisfactory results.

Medullary cancer

Medullary cancer, thyroid gland produces large amounts of calcitonin (a hormone produced by cells of certain thyroid).
Because it can also produce other hormones, the cancer causes symptoms that are not normal.

Cancer tends to spread through the lymphatic system to lymph nodes and via blood to the liver, lungs and bones.

In multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome, Medullary cancer can occur in conjunction with other endocrine cancer.

Treatment includes removal of the entire thyroid gland.
More than 2 / 3 Medullary cancer patients who are part of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome, survival 10 years; if cancer Medullary stand alone, the life expectancy of patients is not that good.

Sometimes this cancer is derived, so someone who has a blood relationship with Medullary cancer, should menjalai screening for genetic disease. If the result is negative, then almost certainly the person will not suffer Medullary cancer. If the result is positive, then he will suffer from cancer Medullary; so that should be considered to undergo removal of the thyroid even if symptoms have not arisen and blood calcitonin levels have not increased.
Calcitonin levels are high or an excessive increase in calcitonin levels after stimulation tests, are also helpful in predicting whether a person will suffer Medullary cancer.

CAUSE
Thyroid cancer is more often found in people who had undergone radiation therapy to the head, neck or chest.

Other risk factors are family history of thyroid cancer and chronic goiter.

SYMPTOMS
There are a enlargement of the thyroid gland or neck swelling.

Patient voice changed, or become hoarse.

It could happen cough or coughing up blood, and diarrhea or constipation.

DIAGNOSIS
Early sign of thyroid cancer is usually a lump that did not feel pain in the neck.

Skening nodulnya thyroid function can determine whether or not, because the nodules are not working tend to be malignant.

Ultrasound can help determine whether nodulnya solid or filled with fluid.

Examples of these nodules are usually taken with a needle for biopsy purposes.
Biopsy is the best way to determine whether benign or malignant

Cancer of reproductive cancer still ranks first in women. Two-thirds of cancer cases worldwide occur in developing countries, including Indonesia. Cancer can be cured if detected early. Therefore, every woman needs to recognize symptoms and it checked out. Cancer, reproductive problems discussed in the seminar organized Indonesian Cancer Foundation in the anniversary-26, Tuesday (3 / 6).

According to Dr. Amr Sofian SpOG of Oncology Division of Gynecology Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia / Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (Faculty University of Indonesia / RSCM), abnormal cell growth / uncontrollable, causing shape changes and enlargement of the body called tumor. There is a benign tumor and malignant (cancerous). The cause is a virus, chemical substances (certain preservatives, tobacco, powder / talk, dyes) or radiation (sun rays, radioactive substances).

The so-called woman’s reproductive organs are composed of the mouth of the uterus / cervix and body of the uterus, ovaries (ovarian), oviduct, and burrow genitals (vagina). In cervical cancer the role of human papilloma virus (HPV).

Note RSCM in 1998 showed, there is cervical cancer 79 percent, while 10 percent of ovarian cancer.

Cervix, thus Major CKM Dr. Imam Soeparmono Toto SpOG of Oncology Division of Gynecology Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gatot Subroto Army Hospital, is the lowest part of the uterus, shaped canal / channel, long-third the length of the uterus.

Risk factor for cervical cancer is sexual relations / married young (less than 20 years), many sexual partners, lack of care for genital hygiene, smoking.

Cervical cancer develops gradually. Pre-cancer include mild dysplasia (five years), medium dysplasia (three years), severe dysplasia (one year) to be a stage 0 cancer. Precancerous stage often does not cause symptoms (92 percent). Next enter in the form of invasive cancer stage I to stage IV cancer. Currently there are symptoms such as post-intercourse bleeding, leucorrhoea, pelvic pain, irritable bowel and small, weight loss, weakness or lack of blood due to bleeding. Travel disease virus dependent malignancies, body condition, and nutritional status.

“But no need to panic, because not all bleeding and whiteness means symptoms of cancer. Women who are married or have sexual relations need to do a Pap smear once a year until the age of 65 years, “said Toto.

According to Amr, prevention efforts that can be done is patterned to live healthy, balanced nutrients, many vegetables and fruits, do not smoke and drink alcohol, safe sexual behavior, conduct routine examinations (Pap smear) and immediately checked out if it felt abnormalities or lumps on the body.

Although ovarian cancer ranks second only gynecologic cancers, mortality is high. According to Dr. Imam Rasjidi SpOG from FKUI / RSCM, this is due to ovarian cancer lasted travel secretly
