Treat Acne with the Pill?

The use of contraceptive pills or birth control pills in combination with a diuretic drugs proved to have great potential in treating acne in women.

As revealed from the results of small studies in the United States recently, Yasmin contraceptive pill drugs plus low-dose diuretic spironolactone proven safe and effective to overcome the problem of severe facial acne.

The focus of the treatment carried out these studies is the role that hormones can play a major role for the formation of acne on the face.

“Numerous studies have demonstrated that the combination of an effective oral contraceptive for treatment of facial acne in women,” Dr Aleksandar Krunic from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, and colleagues who published his findings in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

In his research, the researchers tested the safety and effectiveness of the treatment of acne with spironolactone and Yasmin – a combined contraceptive pill similar estrogen progestin called drospirenone. Just as many as 27 women with chronic acne were included in this study.

Promising
At the end of the study, recorded about 11 percent of women completely free from acne and face acne free of injury. Approximately another 74 percent showed significant recovery, 7.4 percent experienced a penyembuha not too good and 7.4 percent of participants showed no change.

Of treatment are also reported no weight gain is from the participants or any disturbance of menstruation. In addition, there are no side effects severe enough if the two types of treatment was discontinued.

“The combination of spironolactone plus estrogen and drospirenone is an interesting thing in controlling acne that affected her hormone levels of moderate to severe,” said Krunic and his team concluded.

“However, we recommend that our results must be proved again with a number of other studies involving many patients.”
